trial and error

Filed under: Studio, experimentation, exploration, work in progress — Tags: , — Lesley @ 4:08 pm

Frog spawn in our pond seems to be doubling on a daily basis.  Suspended like inverted glass jelly moulds. I chart their progress each time I use the washing line or compost heap.  Signs of an early Spring almost pass me by.  I’m currently working between practices – photography and printmaking.  What initially I thought would be a challenge in a request to produce prints is in fact totally frustrating.  I prefer the print blocks to the prints themselves – yarn, threads, cloth, dabs of grey print ink.  Prints on tissue paper are a possibility but not yet explored.

By chance I came across some A1 monoprints in one of my folders during yet another clear out.  This must be the way forward.  I have spent so much time exploring various approaches.  Freezer paper, pre-cut inkjet sheets, light sensitive inks and so on.  But not oil based it’s so messy.  I don’t even like the smell of it.

Lesley Bricknell ‘Ice maiden’ (2009)

Diversion over the Christmas period.  Inky wedding dress and lace bodice entombed in ice.  Pond (no wildlife!) and bucket respectively.  Bodice like an alien foetus held to the light.  Dress a disappointment and assigned to the washing line.  What did I expect?  The ink stains haven’t moved at all.  The plants that engulfed it fell off  of course in the thaw.  Of interest, however, was the desolate inky dress I intend to explore further.

Ophelia (working title) 2

Filed under: Artists, Sketchbooks, Textiles, exploration — Tags: , — Lesley @ 1:10 pm

I’ve made over thirty images related to ‘Ophelia’ and still no image really pleases me.   The ones below maybe acceptable.   I like the intentional fading out of the sides of the images.  This would allow for an interesting surface on which to print. This, however,  has got to stop,  make a decision!  I’ve always found it a problem in bringing work to a ‘close.’

As a student I amassed a large number of sketchbooks within which my ideas never saw the light of day.  Obviously things have improved  since then but the dilemma remains.  I’m actually afraid this work is in danger of becoming stale.  My focus perhaps too narrow much as I enjoy working with hair and detritus.  Time to let go for a while.  I’ve also added three new links in my sidebar.  Friends Kayla and Gavin and one by Joanna Ebenstein I recently discovered.  All fascinating stuff.
